Pareto Principle in Action

Date Published

A diagram showing Pareto Principle distribution.

I am sure you often find yourself in situations where you seem to do some work, but it does not give results, you study, but you can't learn the important topics, you date, but you don't date the girls you want to date. It is like always going for something in supermarket, but you still forget about the most important items.

There is where Pareto Principle kicks in. Pareto is a name of Italian businessman that discovered that the 20% of the population there owned 80% of the land, where the 20% were the richest.

Many studies discovered that this principle spans itself onto many disciplines, currently it is believed that it can be applied almost anywhere.

I find it really useful because it allows me to:
1. Create meaningful relationships by focusing only on those that are the most important for me

2. Create meaningful business impact by focusing only on those needs of people that are most painful for them

3. Improve my life without overwhelming myself by filtering down to only the most important areas and starting from there

And the list goes on.

Apply it by taking it to an extreme, example:
List of 100 tasks -> 80/20 only 20 of those are important -> 80/20 only 4 of those are important -> 80/20 only 1 task is REALLY IMPORTANT

Ask yourself: "What is the one thing that I can do now such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?". Thank me later.
